The European Union adopts new Regulation on security requirements for digital products

On 10 October 2024, the Council of the European Union (the “Council”) adopted the Cyber Resilience Act (the “CRA”), which aims to ensure that products with digital elements, such as smart fridges and connected home cameras, are safe to use before they are placed on the EU's internal market. The CRA is one of several legislative initiatives in the field of cybersecurity adopted in the context of the EU's Digital Decade. In this article, we briefly review what the Regulation means, which products are covered and what happens next.

Highlights from this year's conference on AI, text and data mining and copyright

Vinge has proudly sponsored the international conference Digital Knowledge - The Library and Copyright in a Global Digital Economy, which was held in Stockholm from 11 to 13 September 2024. The conference, organised by the Swedish National Library, the Swedish Patent and Registration Office and the Stockholm Centre for Commercial Law (SCCL), was fully booked and attended by several leading experts in both law and technology. Tobias Kempas, Vinge, gave a presentation about machine learning and copyright. Vinge also organised a welcome reception as well as a Friday lunch, both of which were appreciated.

Anna Alriksson has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the Young Leaders in Alternative Dispute Resolution (Y-ADR) of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR Institute). The CPR Institute is leading a global effort focusing on conflict prevention and resolution. “Dispute prevention in various forms is an important part of Vinge's dispute resolution practice. On July 12, 2024, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 (the “AI Act”) was published in the EU’s Official Journal. This means that the AI Act enters into force on August 1, 2024.

Stricter cybersecurity requirements ahead - how companies can prepare for the new rules

Against the backdrop of the current geopolitical climate and the increasing digitalisation, the EU is implementing the NIS 2 directive with the aim to strengthen the level of cyber resilience throughout the EU. The new rules are proposed to be introduced in Sweden through a new law, the Cybersecurity Act, which is proposed to enter into force on 1 January 2025. The law imposes increased requirements in relation to information and cyber security and non-compliance can have serious financial consequences.
