Six months of the Swedish FDI Act

The national security environment has deteriorated in recent years. As a result, the Foreign Direct Investment Review Act (FDI Act) was introduced in Sweden in December 2023. Investments in a wide range of Swedish companies may not be completed until they have been notified to and approved by the FDI authority. The Swedish FDI Act has a very broad scope, and many transactions are caught.

EU Economic Security Strategy – proposals for a new FDI regulation, outbound investment and export controls

On 24 January 2024, the European Commission adopted a package identifying five new initiatives to strengthen the economic security of the EU. The basis for the initiatives is the EU Economic Security Strategy announced in June 2023. The primary objective of the strategy is to reduce the risks related to EU trade and investment involving third countries, as well as promoting EU competitiveness and growth.

Louise Brorsson Salomon is a partner at Vinge and this spring she will succeed Maria-Pia Hope, who has been the CEO since 2012. The change in the position of CEO follows a long-term succession plan. The Swedish Supreme Court clarifies the Swedish concept of “redare” (shipowner) and the Swedish Maritime Code’s requirement of qualified gross negligence with regard to the shipowners’ right to limitation of liability

The question of who should be liable as the “redare” of a ship has long been one of the most complex and controversial areas of Swedish maritime law. This question was recently put to the test in the Supreme Court’s judgment in case no. T 6909-22 “Baltic Cable”. The case highlights several interesting aspects of shipowner liability in modern shipping.
